Psalm 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

It’s like my life flashed before my eyes

Have you ever heard of this saying? In relation to this scripture I think about how God saw my life, your life, before his eyes. He saw our unformed bodies. We weren’t even knitted, woven, hemmed yet. And yet he had this book with a plan for each of us in it-by name.

When I write anything, I don’t always know what I’m going to say. But God did; his being is infinite in power and love, his character infinite in wisdom. He knew what he was doing and he took his time for each of us. He didn’t haphazardly create the heavens and earth thinking “whatever happens, happens.”

If I were God and I knew how powerful I was and how much love I had to give, and I have beings with me in the garden. I would want them to choose me. He could have stopped and created the garden in such a way that they had no access to the forbidden fruit. He created us for relationships that points back to him.

If God is for us, who can be against us?

No matter the trial, victory, darkness, sin, temptation, happiness, disappointments, etc., God saw our lives – our unformed body. He didn’t need the physical and tangible things in front of him, he didn’t need to test drive us, he didn’t need to troubleshoot us to make sure we lived by his book. He left room for us to make choices.

In the garden, God saw Adam and Eve, and they saw themselves. They ate the fruit and knew they were naked. And they used leaves to cover themselves and they hid. They were there in the physical. Not unformed. But in the physical. In a sense, they still didn’t choose him. God wants to be chosen.

If you had God’s power, would you protect those who don’t want to be protected? How would you try to prove yourself? Would you try at all? How transparent would you have to be, vulnerable, faithful, loving, would you have to be so they would let you protect them and love them?

God could have been a different God, who knows. But he chose love. Being created in his image, he wants us to choose love. We have that choice.

It makes sense that in our own nakedness we want to hide from God. In our own knowledge, fear, insecurity, etc. We struggle to let God see what is on the inside. Possibly afraid of what could happen if we let him acknowledge what we can’t handle. We sometimes stay stuck forgetting God already loves us.

I can’t move forward just yet.. My unformed body. What is left if there is no body? Time only moves forward and every second is an opportunity. Is it my inmost being? My soul? Everything is exposed before the eyes of him (Heb 4:13)…He knows everything about us from the inside out.

How do you have a plan for something that has yet to exist?

The epitome of faith is God. Though I was unformed, he had a plan. He knew me, loved me, called me. I don’t have to know what God knows. He is the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12).

Is my/ your existence enough to have faith in his plan as well?

Sometimes in our state of being (struggles, etc.) it takes seeing our part in God’s plan for someone else than seeing God’s plan for our own struggle.

…all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

  • This clearly shows who has the power.

Ordained: to enact or establish by law, edict, etc. To decree; give orders

  • This very definition describes God’s providence and authority.
  • When I think of establish, I think of meant to be.
    • Today, yesterday, last year, last month, last week, was meant to be according to the book before these times came to be.
  • Before the struggle came to be, God gave a way out.
  • He made clear who he is and his promises.
  • His love for you….was already established
  • His plan for you…was already established
  • We were already established in his love

Have faith and trust that being established in God is enough to continue taking steps.

If feeling unsure, pray and ask for established guidance.

As I personally struggle to believe (process of faith), I tell myself that when I take a step with Christ as my light the path will be firm.

  • Path to eternal life
  • Not path to feeling better or getting what I want but getting what I need FOR ETERNITY
  • Have faith for eternity,…in the book where all my days are already ordained
